Enjoy a delicious breakfast or dessert while still eating healthy with this delicious healthy apple crumble! Juicy cinnamon apples that are topped with a crunchy oat topping, enjoy it for breakfast, dessert or as a snack.
About This Recipe
This recipe is a healthier alternative to the classic apple crumble/crisp that’s made with a layer of juicy apples and topped with a crunchy brown sugar and cinnamon crumble that’s made with flour and lot’s of butter. This version however, is made with fibrous oats, and honey rather than sugar. Also most of the sweetness comes from the fresh apples, but it can be easily adjusted to your liking by adding more or less honey/maple syrup.
You can have this healthy apple crumble for breakfast, as a dessert or even as a snack! Top it with some Greek yogurt, coconut whipped cream or have it with a glass of your favorite type of milk!
Although this apple crumble recipe is made with healthy ingredients, all of them are quite easy to find in all grocery stories.
What You Need To Make This Recipe
Oats: you’ll need old fashioned rolled oats, any other type of oats will not work as well.
Ground oats: just blend some of the rolled oats into a flour or use store bought oat flour.
Coconut Oil: if you wanted to, you could replace this with melted butter, or vegetable oil.
Honey: this is the sweetener, you could also use maple syrup in place of this.
Apples: you could use any type of apples. Give the apples a taste so you could have an idea of how much sweetener (honey/maple syrup) you need to use.
Vanilla extract: this is optional, but using a bit of vanilla really makes the dish more flavorful!
How To Make Healthy Apple Crumble
Step 1: Core and thinly slice all the apples, except one, and add that into a large bowl. Grate the remaining apple and add that into the bowl as well. Add in the rest of the ingredients, and give it a mix.
Step 2: Spread the mixture onto a 6 inch square pan, cover it with aluminum foil and bake at 180 °C / 350 °F for 15 minutes.
Step 3: While the apples bake combine the ingredients for the topping.
Step 4: Once the apples are finished baking, spread on the oat topping, and bake uncovered for another 20 minutes at 180 °C / 350 °F. After being bakes, let the healthy apple crumble cool down for 15 minutes before serving.
Storing The Healthy Apple Crumble
Store any leftovers in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Pro Tips
- You could add in any spices you’d like into the apples or the topping. I only used cinnamon, but other spices like, nutmeg, or clove would also be delicious!
- If you have a convection oven (oven with a fan setting), reduce the temperature by 20 degrees.
- The amount of honey/maple syrup can be adjusted to your liking.
- Swap out the walnuts for any of your favorite nuts, almonds or hazelnuts are a great option!
- This recipe takes minutes to make, so you can make it fresh for breakfast or make the night before and store it in the fridge.
- Serve the healthy apple crumble with a dollop of Greek yogurt or coconut whipped cream.
- If you like your apple crumble warm, go ahead and microwave it for 10-15 seconds if you made it ahead.
